As autumn settled over Victoria, the debut of the proved exactly why fantasy lovers, history buffs, and curious adventurers have been craving an event like this. For a first-time event and the very first outing for the Melbourne RenFaire team, the weekend was an overwhelming success, even with Sunday’s rain threatening to dampen the festivities.
Held at the picturesque Yarra Glen Racecourse, the grounds were transformed into the mythical Kingdom of Valendor, a fully immersive fantasy realm where banners fluttered in the wind, music echoed through the streets, and wandering performers brought the world to life. Ancient forests whispered tales of dragons and magic while the Festival of the Second Sun unfolded around thousands of eager attendees.

And honestly? Melbourne committed to the bit in the best possible way.
Saturday’s event delivered perfect weather, helping create a genuinely magical atmosphere from the moment the gates opened. Nearly everyone embraced the fantasy spirit, with attendees arriving in elaborate medieval gowns, leather armour, cloaks, fairy wings, and enough chainmail to outfit a small army. Between the knights and tavern-goers, we even spotted a few versions of Doctor Strange, seemingly lost somewhere in the multiverse and accidentally transported back to medieval times.
Across the sprawling grounds, there was something happening at every turn. Jousting tournaments drew huge crowds, musicians filled the pathways with lively tavern tunes, and performers kept audiences entertained throughout the day. Vendors lined the streets selling everything from handcrafted fantasy wares to trinkets worthy of a travelling merchant in a role-playing game.
One of the standout moments for us was the equestrian skills showcase, featuring Heartbreak High's Chloe Hayden alongside an incredibly talented group of riders. The demonstration blended performance, horsemanship, and fantasy storytelling into one of the weekend’s most memorable spectacles.

Of course, no Ren Faire is complete without a good joust, and the tournaments absolutely delivered. The pounding of hooves, clashing lances, and roaring crowds created the kind of high-energy atmosphere that makes these events such a fan favourite. Whether you were deeply invested in the fictional rivalries or just there for the chaos, the jousts were an undeniable highlight.
And yes, we also met a mermaid performer, which somehow perfectly sums up the wonderfully surreal energy of the entire weekend.
Sunday brought far wetter conditions, turning parts of the grounds into a muddy fantasy battlefield, but if anything, it only added to the experience. Rather than letting the weather ruin the fun, attendees embraced the chaos wholeheartedly. Cloaks became soaked, boots disappeared into mud, and spirits somehow remained impossibly high as festival-goers continued their adventures through Valendor.
For a first-ever event, Melbourne RenFaire exceeded expectations. The attention to detail, immersive world-building, passionate volunteers, dedicated performers, and enthusiastic community all combined to create something genuinely special. It didn’t just feel like another themed market or cosplay gathering, it felt like Melbourne had briefly opened a portal to another world.
There are whispers the Renfair team will be taking the Kingdom of Valendor across Australia and we cannot wait to see how they continue to build the magic.
