If you thought you were safely out of Night City, think again.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 finally has a release date, and CD PROJEKT RED has dropped a brand-new trailer giving us our first proper taste of what is coming next. The standalone anime series will premiere October 20, exclusively on Netflix, and honestly, we're already emotionally preparing ourselves for whatever fresh trauma Night City has in store.
Set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, Edgerunners 2 is once again being brought to life through a collaboration between CD PROJEKT RED and legendary animation studio TRIGGER. This time around, however, we're getting an entirely new cast of characters and a brand-new story to get attached to.
And if the latest trailer is anything to go by, we're probably going to regret getting attached.
Welcome Back to Night City
The first Cyberpunk: Edgerunners became something of a phenomenon for good reason. It took the already chaotic, neon-soaked world of Cyberpunk 2077 and turned it into a deeply personal story about ambition, identity, love and the very real consequences of trying to survive in a city designed to chew people up.
So, naturally, we're a little nervous about Edgerunners 2.
Rather than continuing David and Lucy's story, the new anime is a standalone 10-episode series following a fresh group of characters as their lives become increasingly tangled together across Night City.
The new trailer puts revenge and redemption front and centre, teasing another raw and decidedly human story underneath all the chrome, explosions and ridiculously stylish animation.
Because that's what made Edgerunners hit so hard in the first place. Beneath all the cyberware and neon, it was a story about people who wanted something more from their lives, even when Night City had other plans.
The Trailer Has Us Intrigued
The new footage is short, but it wastes absolutely no time throwing us back into the chaos.
There are explosions, fights, neon-soaked streets and plenty of that unmistakable Cyberpunk aesthetic, but there's also a sense that Edgerunners 2 is going to be telling a much more intimate story amid all the mayhem.
And honestly? That's exactly what we wanted.
There is a particular danger that comes with making a follow-up to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The original series has developed a pretty devoted fanbase, and trying to simply recreate its formula would probably be the easiest way to make a sequel feel hollow.
The good news is that Edgerunners 2 appears to be taking a different route.
New characters. New stories. New emotional damage. We'll take it.
Can Edgerunners 2 Live Up to the Original?
This is the question hovering over everything.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners managed to become much more than a tie-in anime. It introduced people to the world of Cyberpunk 2077, gave existing fans another reason to fall hopelessly into Night City and somehow made us care deeply about a group of fictional characters in just ten episodes.
That's a pretty intimidating legacy.
But having a completely new cast could actually be exactly what Edgerunners 2 needs. Instead of trying to recreate David and Lucy's story, the new series has the opportunity to show us another corner of Night City and remind us that there are countless stories happening behind those neon signs.
And with TRIGGER back on animation duties, we're certainly not worried about the series looking the part.
Whether it can break our hearts in quite the same way as the first Edgerunners, however, remains to be seen.
Maybe that's for the best. We're still recovering.
When Does Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Come Out?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres October 20, 2026, exclusively on Netflix.
The series will run for 10 episodes and is set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, but will feature a new cast and standalone storyline.
If you want to get yourself emotionally prepared, or, more realistically, emotionally unprepared, you can also add Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 to your Netflix list ahead of its premiere.
Night City is waiting.
And considering what happened last time, we're probably going to need tissues.
